The office of Tunisia’s President received a letter containing suspicious powder on Wednesday, according to local media reports.
President Kais Saied did not open the letter and is in good health, a source said.
Some local websites reported that the lethal toxin ricin had been found in the envelope, and that it had been addressed to the presidency in the Carthage Palace.
It has not been reported where the suspecious package came from but it came at a time Tunisia has faced violent protests for several weeks which have at times turned into riots. One young protester was killed in the clashes on Monday.
The protests started on the 10th anniversary of the Tunisian revolution, which unleashed the Arab Spring. Saied, a political independent who won election in 2019, told a gathering of national security officials this week that there were conspiracies afoot which were aimed at thwarting his work at home and abroad.
