Police have detained at least 12 people following protests over the reopening of the Lekki toll gate in Lagos on Saturday.
The Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry on February 6 had ordered that the toll gate be handed over back to the Lekki Concession Company for reopening.
But the panel’s decision was not unanimous as some members disagreed with the reopening since investigations into the events of October 20 were still ongoing.
The toll gate had been closed since October, during the #EndSARS protests, which called for an end to police brutality across the country.
Following the decision of the protesters, the Lagos State Police Command said it would not allow any form of demonstration that would again lead to the destruction of property and government assets.
Hakeem Odumosu, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, issued a terse warning during a press conference in Ikeja on Thursday, February 11.
On Friday, February 12, a heavy presence of armed policemen was observed at the tollgate, some parts of Lekki and other areas of the state.
