President Muhammadu Buhari has sent to the Senate a list of 16-man nominees for confirmation and appointment as chairman and members of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
This was contained in an executive communication by President Buhari which was first read by President of the Senate, Senator Ahmad Lawan on Tuesday on the floor of the Senate.
However, on Wednesday, Senate Leader, Senator Yahaya Abdullahi moved for the Senate to consider the president’s request on the confirmation of the nominations for appointment as Chairman and Members of the NHRC in accordance with the provisions of section 2(3) of the National Human Rights Commission Act (as amended). The move was seconded by Senate Minority Leader.
On the list are:
- Salamatu Hussaini Suleiman – Chairman
- Mrs. Beatrice Jedy-Agba, Mni – Member
- Amb. Umar Zainab Salisu – Member
- Mrs. Dafe T. Adesida – Member
- Joseph Onyemaechi Mmamel – Member
- Ahmad Abubakar Fingilla. – Member
- Kemi Asiwaju-Okeyonda – Member
- Abubakar Muhammed – Member
- Femi Okewo – Member
- Sunny Daniel – Member
- Barrister Agabaidu Chukwuemeka Jideani – Member
- Mrs. Nella Andem-Rabana, SAN – Member
- Azubuike Nwakwenta – Member
- Jamila Isah – Member
- Mrs. Idayat Omolara Hassan – Member
- Prof. Anthony Ojukwu – Member
The president’s request was thereafter referred to the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters to report back in two weeks.
