A police officer has reportedly shot dead his colleague in Aba, Abia State, while trying to arrest a suspect.
Reports say the incident occurred yesterday at the Bata Junction, as the killer policeman was trying to shoot at a suspect for resisting arrest but mistakenly shot the colleague.
Trouble brewed when the policemen stopped a tinted-glassed jeep approaching from Factory Road and tried to force the occupants into their patrol van.
A policeman who was accompanying the tinted-glassed jeep even pleaded with the patrol team to allow them passage, but to no avail.
When the occupants of the vehicle resisted the arrest, one of the police officers pulled his gun and accidentally shot at his colleague.
“When the police officer shot at his colleague, they suddenly left the suspect they were trying to arrest and began attending to their colleague,” an eye witness recounts.
“However, the suspect fled to a nearby fast food company where the soldiers stationed there intervened and the police officers took their shot colleague into their patrol van and left.’
The injured policeman was said to have died on the way to the hospital, but this could not be confirmed as at press time.
When contacted, the Abia State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Geoffrey Ogbonna, said he was yet to be briefed and cannot make comments.
