Dr. Esther Ngozi Ohihoin is a Research Fellow and Consultant Cardiologist at the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research and HICI Healthcare Limited. She is also a Lecturer in Physiology at the Eko University of Medicine, Ijanikin, Lagos in affiliation with the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research.
Her research area is in Cardiology Non-communicable Diseases (NCDs), with a special bias for Hypertension as an entry point. This is true for both the general population and in selected groups of patients such as those living with HIV/AIDS. She has a passion for clinically oriented research which subsequently bears on the therapy and management of cardiovascular diseases. Her dissertation for her master’s degree in Physiology was on the Fetal Origins of Cardiovascular Diseases.
Esther Ngozi Ohihoin born to the now Late Rev. Christian Aniemeke and Pastor (Mrs.) Roseline Aniemeke as the second of six children, has distinguished herself in diverse capacities. She was a member of the pioneering set of the School for the Gifted and Talented Children – Suleja Academy after she won a national scholarship to attend the school that was then initiated and funded by the Presidency of the Federal Government of Nigeria.
Thereafter, she graduated with honors from Nigeria’s premier university, the University of Ibadan with a medical degree. Armed with a medical degree, she proceeded to Jos University Teaching Hospital to train as a Physician and Cardiologist. She has several scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals of the academic world. Her dissertation for her Cardiology Fellowship was a pioneering work in Chronotherapy studies in Africa. The work was a recipient of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital Provost Award.
She has worked in the capacity of Head of the Department of Internal Medicine for several years at the foremost and arguably the busiest and largest secondary health centre – General Hospital, Odan, Lagos. This centre boasts of over 200 patients daily at the Medicine Clinic, two-thirds of whom are patients with cardiovascular diseases.
Together with her husband who is a Gynaecologist and Obstetrician, she co-founded HICI Healthcare Limited located in Lekki Phase 1, Lagos. HICI Healthcare is a specialist private practice with cardiovascular care and management of complicated hypertension as one of its main flagships.
Esther Ngozi Ohihioin is also the co-founder of pregnancynigeria.com, an online blog dedicated to providing Reproductive Healthcare to women all over the world.
Dr. Esther Ngozi Ohihoin has used her platform as a medical practitioner to provide free medical care to indigent members of the community. At the heart of her service, is a deep conviction in her faith in Jesus Christ. This has inspired her to volunteer in diverse medical missions to hard-to-reach regions within and outside Nigeria.
Esther is passionate about translating cardiovascular disease research into clinical relevance, therapy, and applications.
She is happily married to her best friend, Aigbe Gregory and together they are blessed with two teenage children– Hephzibah and Vahe.
It is in recognition of her accomplishments in Human Medicine and Health Facility Management that Dr. Esther Ngozi Ohihoin was deemed worthy to be conferred with the Nigerian Achievement Award.
