Mrs Muibat Adetutu Akintayo is one of the most experienced and resourceful Physiotherapists in today’s Nigeria. She is the incumbent Director of Physiotherapy Services and Head of the Department of Physiotherapy at Nigeria’s premier tertiary health institution, University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan.
In her role, she is in charge of the general administration of the department. She leads the planning, development and implementation of Physiotherapy programmes and policies of the department. She advises the hospital on annual budgetary preparations for Physiotherapy and ensures their proper implementation.
On the academic side, she coordinates all research activities of the department. She supervises the teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate students in the department. She teaches Clinical Physiotherapy students and those on outside posting. She also trains interns.
Muibat Akintayo began her professional training at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife in 1984. She graduated with a Bachelor of Medical Rehabilitation degree in Physiotherapy in 1989. She earned an M.Sc Physiotherapy degree from the University of Ibadan in 2001 with an excellent grade.
She attended the Certificated Postgraduate Programme organized by McKenzie Institute International on Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy Part A – The Lumbar Spine (August 2007). She also attended the Certificated Postgraduate Programme by the McKenzie Institute International on Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy Part B – The Cervical and Thoracic Spine (September 2007). In June 2008, she participated in the Certificated National Cognitive and Skill Evaluation for the Basic Life Support Health Care Provider Programme.
Mrs Akintayo joined the services of the University College Hospital, Ibadan in July 1991 as Physiotherapist 1. She rose steadily through the ranks to become Senior Physiotherapist, Principal Physiotherapist, Chief Physiotherapist, Assistant Director, Deputy Director and now, Director (Physiotherapy).
She is a member of the Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy, a Registered Physiotherapist by the Medical Rehabilitation Therapists Board of Nigeria, and a Registered Member of Health Professional Council UK.
She is a Fellow of the National Physiotherapy College, the Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy, the Institute of Management Consultants and the Institute of Corporate Administration.
Muibat Akintayo has attended over 40 professional workshops and conferences in her field. She has been published in Prime Medical Journal.
She has been honoured through several awards and recognition. They include: Meritorious Award as Treasurer, Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy Oyo State Chapter (November 2007 – October 2011), Award of Excellence, Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy Oyo State Chapter (2019), Outstanding Leadership Award, Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy (2019) and Merit Award, Rotary District 9125 as Community Health and Human Developer.
It is in recognition of her accomplishments in the sphere of Physiotherapy and Medial Rehabilitation Services that Mrs Muibat Adetutu Akintayo was deemed worthy to be conferred with the Nigerian Achievement Award.
