The Supreme Court has adjourned the hearing in the suit filed by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) seeking the release of their leader, Nnamdi Kanu. The new hearing date has been set for September 14. The case gained attention after the Appellate Court’s ruling halted Kanu’s release, prompting IPOB to file a suit at the apex court.

Ifeanyi Ejiofor, the lead lawyer for IPOB and a prominent human rights activist, released a statement expressing their appeal to the Supreme Court to overturn the ruling of the Court of Appeal. The aim is to secure Kanu’s discharge and prevent any further detention or prosecution on any charges in Nigerian courts. The Court of Appeal had previously granted a stay of execution of its own judgment, pending the determination of the appeal filed by the Federal Government before the Supreme Court.

Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN), a renowned Senior Advocate of Nigeria, and the defense team thoroughly reviewed the ruling and unanimously decided to appeal against it, considering its lack of legal foundation or factual basis. This decision was confirmed by Nnamdi Kanu himself during a recent visit by Ifeanyi Ejiofor. The defense team is proactively following the administrative process to ensure the appeals receive expedited hearings, in accordance with the Supreme Court’s fast-track rules.

Before the hearing, Kanu’s special counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, urged the Supreme Court to ensure justice prevails in the trial of his client. The case continues to draw attention as it unfolds.
