In a bid to alleviate the financial burden on farmers resulting from the removal of fuel subsidy, the Borno State Government has taken a significant step by offering 80 buses and pick-up vans to transport farmers from their communities to farmlands across the state. This initiative aims to support farmers and ensure they can access their farmlands without facing excessive transportation costs.

Governor Babagana Zulum unveiled this welfare scheme during a gathering of thousands of farmers at Molai village, located on the outskirts of Maiduguri. Addressing the crowd, Governor Zulum emphasized the importance of supporting farmers, highlighting their significant contribution to the state’s agricultural sector.

The 80 vehicles provided for this purpose include 50 luxurious buses from the Borno Express Transport Corporation’s fleet and 30 pick-up vans that have been specifically hired and provided by the state government. Governor Zulum expressed his commitment to the agricultural sector and his desire to assist farmers during this critical period.

“We are here purposely to support the farmers. You can see thousands of them have gathered, and their numbers can reach up to 100,000,” Governor Zulum addressed the crowd. “Due to the removal of fuel subsidy, which although has long-term benefits, the cost of transportation has increased. Therefore, the Borno State Government has decided to provide 50 buses (and 30 pick-up vans) to convey farmers to their farmlands this rainy season.”

The gesture by the state government aims to reduce the financial strain on farmers, ensuring they have access to transportation to cultivate their farmlands effectively. By providing these vehicles, the government hopes to mitigate the challenges posed by the increased cost of living due to the withdrawal of fuel subsidy.
