The Lagos State government has announced a 50% reduction in fares for all state-run transportation services, along with plans to distribute foodstuffs to vulnerable populations. This comes as palliative measures to ease the burden of federal fuel subsidy removal.
At a press briefing on Monday, Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu confirmed the government will roll out targeted relief programs to help citizens manage the hardship caused by rising fuel costs.
In addition to halved fares on state-run transportation services, the informal transport sector will decrease prices by 25% through agreements with yellow bus operators and similar services.
According to Sanwo-Olu, the 50% fare reductions for state-run transport services will take effect starting Wednesday. Meanwhile, plans are being finalized to provide basic food items to identified economically disadvantaged households across Lagos.
The governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting citizens through this difficult transition period via strategic welfare initiatives. With subsidies ending, the government hopes discounted transport and food supplies will cushion the impact of higher fuel prices on the state’s poorest residents.
