The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called for a nationwide strike set to begin August 2nd in response to federal policies under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The major labour union is mobilizing to push back against fuel price increases and other government actions.
NLC spokesperson Ben Upah confirmed the planned August strike action in an exclusive interview with Daily Post Wednesday. Upah indicated the strike notice will be formally conveyed through an upcoming statement from the union’s leadership.
This looming work stoppage threatens to bring economic activity across sectors like transportation, banking, manufacturing and public services to a standstill. Previous national strikes organized by the NLC have successfully pressured government leaders on issues of fuel subsidies, electricity tariffs and anti-worker legislation.
The recently inaugurated Tinubu administration faces this strike threat early into its tenure. With further details still pending, the announced strike portends a charged showdown between the Tinubu government and the influential labor federation over pressing economic conditions facing average Nigerians.
