The Senate has confirmed the nomination of the newly appointed service chiefs by President Bola Tinubu. The confirmation took place after the top brass underwent a thorough screening process conducted by the upper chamber.

During a closed-door session, Senate President Godswill Akpabio revealed that the service chiefs had answered questions related to defence matters and other pressing issues. The confirmation followed President Tinubu’s letter, read on the Senate floor earlier in the week, requesting the red chamber’s approval of the nominated service chiefs.

Upon the resumption of plenary on Thursday, the Senate began the screening process for the service chiefs. Each nominee took to the podium to outline their strategies for tackling insecurity in the country, providing insights into how they plan to address the pressing challenges if confirmed.

The confirmed service chiefs are Maj. Gen. C.G Musa as Chief of Defence Staff, Maj. Gen. T. A Lagbaja as Chief of Army Staff, Rear Admiral E. A Ogalla as Chief of Naval Staff, and AVM H.B Abubakar as Chief of Air Staff.

On June 19, 2023, just three weeks after his inauguration, President Tinubu undertook a shakeup of the Nigerian military leadership. The move resulted in the removal and retirement of several high-ranking officials. Alkali Usman was removed from the position of Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Lucky Irabor was sacked as Chief of Defence Staff, Faruk Yahaya retired as Chief of Army Staff, Awwal Gambo was removed as Chief of Naval Staff, and Isiaka Amao retired as Chief of Air Staff.
