The Court of Appeals in Abuja has overturned the election victory of Senator Simon Mwadkwon, the minority leader representing Plateau North Senatorial District in the National Assembly.
In a unanimous ruling, a three-judge panel led by Justice Daudu Williams found that Mwadkwon’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) failed to properly nominate him as their candidate.
The judges determined the PDP did not fully comply with court orders requiring the party to hold a congress in all 12 local government areas (LGAs) before making nominations. A Plateau State High Court issued that mandate in 2020.
Citing the party’s non-compliance with the existing court directive, the appellate court has mandated a new election for the Plateau North Senate seat within 90 days.
The ruling throws Mwadkwon’s Senate victory into doubt pending the court-ordered special election. The rerun will determine who will represent Plateau North in the upper chamber of the National Assembly.
