Former Nigerian Petroleum Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke appeared at Westminster Magistrates Court in London on Monday facing bribery charges. The UK’s National Crime Agency alleges she accepted over $140,000 in cash and luxury items.

Alison-Madueke, who oversaw Nigeria’s oil sector from 2010-2015, was granted £70,000 bail under strict conditions including an electronic tag and curfew. Her lawyer indicated she will plead not guilty.

The ex-minister’s next court date is October 30th at Southwark Crown Court. Investigators claim Alison-Madueke benefited from cash, private flights, expensive vacations, real estate, and gifts from elite stores during her ministerial tenure.

Earlier this year, the NCA provided evidence enabling U.S. authorities to recover $53 million linked to her alleged corruption. The agency contends bribery enables serious crimes and harms developing countries.

Alison-Madueke has faced charges of money laundering and stealing billions in public funds since leaving Nigeria in 2015 when President Muhammadu Buhari took power. She was first arrested in the UK that same year but released on bail.

The high profile case spotlights longstanding allegations of graft and abuse of office during her oil ministry leadership. Her denials and legal battles continue on both sides of the Atlantic.
