The Chief Registrar of the Court of Appeal, Umar Bangari, has clarified controversies surrounding the recent judgment on the Kano Governorship Election dispute. Bangari explained that a minor typo in the judgment text did not affect the court’s findings and conclusions.
He cited Court rules allowing the court to correct any clerical errors once notified by parties in the case. Bangari insisted the judgment remains legally valid.
The judgment upheld the election tribunal’s ruling which invalidated Kabir Yusuf of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) as the winner of the March 2023 gubernatorial poll.
In recent weeks, the appellate court nullified the elections of three opposition party governors over irregularities. In Zamfara, the court ruled the election inconclusive and ordered a new vote in three local councils. The ruling raises uncertainty over Governor Dauda Lawal’s position as he faces a challenge from APC candidate Bello Matawalle.
On Sunday, the court also sacked the Plateau governor, ruling his party violated a court order during local primaries. It ordered that the APC’s Nentawe Goshwe be issued a certificate of return instead.
