Dr Oyebimpe Oluwaseun Akinbunmi is a ‘seven-star’ Consultant Family Physician, skilled in the areas of caregiving, communication, coordination of care, advocacy, resource management, research, and teaching. She provides comprehensive and continuing medical care to her clients irrespective of age, gender, and disease entity using a patient-centered approach. Her area of specialization is Family Medicine and she has a great passion for adolescent health care, which is a subspecialty under Family Medicine.
She is an avid public speaker who is fluent in English and Yoruba languages. She has conducted health education and screening tests for several private and religious organizations as her community social responsibility within and outside Lagos State.
Oyebimpe obtained her First School Leaving Certificate from Ori Oke Baptist Primary School, Ogbomoso, and her Senior Secondary School Certificate from Anglican Grammar School, Ogbomoso, Oyo State from where she hails. In the year 1998, the brilliant girl was given a scholarship by the Ogbomoso Progressive Elite Club for her excellent performance in their yearly competition for secondary school students in the community.
Her passion for helping people and her vision of becoming a medical doctor made her study Medicine and Surgery at the prestigious Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso. She had her housemanship program at the LAUTECH Teaching Hospital Osogbo, Osun State.
She served as a Medical Officer during her National Youth Service (NYSC) in 2008 at the Government House Clinic, Katsina, Katsina State where she worked in the medical team of the wife of the Governor of the state. She proceeded to Maternal and Children Hospital, Malumfashi, also in Katsina state in 2009, then to State Specialist Hospital, Ikare, Ondo State still as a Medical Officer. She was dutiful, providing outpatient care in the emergency, medical, obstetrics and gynaecology, postnatal care, and family planning services to patients.
After a brief role as a Medical Officer in 2011 at Subol Hospital, Ikotun, Lagos State, the illustrious Dr. Akinbunmi became Registrar at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja. She rotated through the departments of general surgery, orthopaedics, urology, burns and plastics, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, psychiatry, laboratory medicine, family medicine, community medicine, ENT, internal medicine, and ophthalmology during which time she attended to outpatients with diverse conditions, teaching medical students and delivering seminars.
Rising through the ranks, the brilliant doctor became a Senior Registrar where her responsibilities included supervision of registrars, handling of units and departmental clinical meetings, organizing clinical drills and journal clubs for junior residents, coordinating patients’ care, conducting pre-employment medical checks for companies, carrying out regular periodic health checks, providing appropriate immunizations, educating clients and reiterating the need for lifestyle changes and self-care practices, in addition to, clinical research work.
Dr. Akinbunmi attained another career milestone in October 2019, to become a Fellow of Medical College of Family Medicine (FMCFM) conferred by the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria. She currently runs the Adolescent Medicine Clinic, at the Family Medicine Department, LASUTH. She supervises and holds teaching sessions for medical officers, residents and senior residents, providing general outpatient care, clinical activities, clinical meetings, administrative work, and clinical research work by resident doctors.
Oyebimpe Akinbunmi conducted undergraduate research on the Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice of Voluntary Confidential Counseling and Testing of HIV/AIDS among young adults in Alekuwodo Area, Osogbo, Osun State. She had another postgraduate research on ‘The Impact of Complementary and Alternative Medicine use on medication adherence, among hypertensive patients attending the Family Medicine Clinic, LASUTH, Ikeja, Lagos State and a casebook of twenty cases managed at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Primary Health Center, Onigbongbo, Ikeja and Able God Hospital, Ijesha, Lagos State, which are part of the requirements for Fellowship qualification by the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria.
Arising from her passion for adolescent sexual health, in 2015, she joined Mirabel Center, a sexual assault referral center situated within LASUTH to work as a certified forensic and medical examiner of survivors of sexual assault. Her role includes but is not limited to, assessment of sexual assault survivors and documentation of evidence. She ensures appropriate prophylactic treatment is given to survivors to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections, and provides active and long-term psychological care and counseling. She advocates raising awareness about rape in the state and its environs. She is an expert witness for Lagos State on forensic medical evaluation of survivors of sexual assault and has appeared in the court of law on several occasions to present their medical and forensic findings.
The vibrant doctor has attended several trainings in her profession such as the “Research Methodology in Medicine Workshop” (March 2013), “Health Resources Management Course” (March 2014), and “Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics” (2012) where she gained competence in delivery of shoulder dystocia, breech extraction, postpartum hemorrhage, just to mention a few.
She is a member of the World Organization of National Colleges, Academies and Academic Associations of General Practitioners/Family Physicians (WONCA), Society of Family Physicians of Nigeria (SOFPON), Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Lagos, the Medical Guild and the Nigeria Medical Association, Lagos state.
A dynamic Family Physician, who cares for her clients from cradle to grave, Dr Oyebimpe Akinbunmi, is a public speaker who has been featured on various radio and online programs relating to adolescent, sexual, and general health. She organizes adolescent and age-appropriate sexual health education, seminars, both online and physical, and screening tests for all ages in schools, religious gatherings, and her community.
She is married to Mr. Akinsola Akinbunmi, FCA (Fellow Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria), and their marriage is blessed with beautiful children.
It is in recognition of her contribution to national development in the field of Human Medicine that Dr. Oyebimpe Oluwaseun Akinbunmi was deemed worthy to be conferred with the Woman of Merit Gold Award which is part of the PSR National Awards.
