The organized labor unions of Nigeria have announced plans for a nationwide strike in response to the alleged assault and abduction of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) president, Joe Ajaero.

The Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria stated in a press conference on Friday that they will commence the strike on Wednesday, November 8th.

The labor leaders outlined six demands to the federal government, which include the immediate removal and investigation of the Imo State Commissioner of Police and Area Commander. The unions accuse these officials of enabling the brutalization and unlawful detention of Ajaero and other union members.

According to the unions, Ajaero was beaten and abducted by armed policemen while attending a meeting in Owerri. He was allegedly held in detention for hours before pressure secured his release.

The federal government is yet to officially respond to the strike announcement, which could bring major economic disruptions next week if negotiations fail. The unions represent millions of workers across Nigeria’s public and private sectors.
