The leaders of Nigeria’s largest labor unions have announced a total nationwide strike starting next Tuesday, November 14, 2023.

The joint decision comes after an emergency meeting of the National Executive Councils of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) on Tuesday in Abuja.

The unions stated immediate mobilization of members has begun across the country in preparation.

The organized labor action follows alleged police brutality last week against NLC President Joe Ajaero in Imo State.

Widespread outrage ensued within the labor community, accusing Imo State Police Commissioner Mohammed Barde of enabling the attack on Ajaero in Owerri.

The unions presented the federal government a five-day ultimatum on Friday demanding Barde’s replacement, while also implicating Governor Hope Uzodimma in the incident. Uzodimma, who faces re-election, has denied involvement.

Additionally, they called for arrests and prosecution of unnamed aides to the governor. Failure to meet demands would trigger nationwide industrial action, the unions warned.
