The Nigerian government has announced a 50% discount on road transport fares and free train rides to help citizens travel affordably this holiday season.

Minister of Solid Minerals Dele Alake unveiled the relief package during a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday. He said the discounted fares will take effect December 22nd and remain valid until January 4th, 2024.

“We want all Nigerians who wish to travel home or visit loved ones to do so without financial stress,” Alake remarked. “This gesture demonstrates President Bola Tinubu’s care and commitment to easing citizens’ burdens.”

The discount applies to interstate bus services offered by licensed luxury bus operators. All train services currently in operation will also be free of charge for passengers embarking on return holiday trips.

Air travel has been excluded given the initiative’s focus on budget-conscious travelers and families.

Alake noted security agencies have been directed to collaborate closely and ensure safety during the busy holiday movement. He urged citizens to be security-conscious, law-abiding and considerate of fellow travelers while enjoying the festive season.

“We wish everyone happy holidays filled with love, community and moderation,” Alake concluded.

The relief package aims to cushion the impact of high transport costs for average Nigerians this Christmas and New Year season.
