Kunle Oluomo has been impeached as the Speaker of Ogun state House of Assembly.
In a plenary session on Tuesday, 18 out of the 26 members of the Ogun State House of Assembly voted to impeach Kunle Oluomo, citing allegations of embezzlement of funds, highhandedness, and related offenses.
The Assembly swiftly elected Oludaisi Elemide as the new Speaker. Addressing members after the impeachment, Elemide urged calm, emphasizing that the move was not aimed at the state governor, Dapo Abiodun. The House adjourned plenary for two weeks, with Elemide now holding the symbol of authority, the maze.
Oluomo had previously faced charges of money laundering, with the EFCC arraigning him and three others on September 6, 2022, over an alleged N2.475bn fraud. The trial continues as Oluomo remains on bail.
