The Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) Dauda Lawal’s election as Zamfara State Governor has been affirmed by the Supreme Court. The apex court overturned the Court of Appeal’s decision that declared the governorship election in Zamfara State inconclusive.
Earlier, the tribunal had dismissed the petition filed by Bello Matawalle, the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, challenging Dauda Lawal’s victory on the PDP platform. However, the Court of Appeal declared the election in the state inclusive and ordered a rerun in three local government areas: Maradun, Birnin-Magaji, and Bukkuyum.
The Supreme Court, in its lead judgment delivered by Emmanuel Agim, criticized the Court of Appeal’s decision as perverse. Agim highlighted that the respondents failed to provide substantial evidence to support allegations of overvoting, among other issues.
Consequently, the Supreme Court set aside the Court of Appeal’s order declaring the election inclusive and upheld Dauda Lawal’s election as Zamfara State Governor.
