The Ikeja High Court in Lagos State has ordered the remand of former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Emefiele is to remain in EFCC custody until the next adjourned date, Thursday, April 11, when the court will deliver its ruling on his bail application.
Additionally, Justice Rahman Oshodi ordered the remand of Emefiele’s co-defendant, Henry Omoile, at the Ikoyi Prison, pending the court’s decision on his bail application on the same date.
The court’s decision to remand both individuals followed the bail applications filed by their counsel, AbdulHakeem Labi-Lawal. Labi-Lawal urged the court to grant Emefiele bail on self-recognizance or on the most liberal terms, pending the hearing and determination of the case. Similarly, he requested the court to grant bail to the second defendant, Omoile, on the most liberal terms.
Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Rotimi Oyedepo, representing the EFCC, did not oppose the bail requests during the proceedings. Oyedepo urged the court to exercise its discretion in granting bail to the defendants.
