The Italian coast guard confirmed on Thursday that the body of British tech magnate Mike Lynch was recovered from the wreckage of a superyacht off the coast of Sicily. Once touted as “unsinkable,” the yacht met its tragic end on Monday during a storm.

The “The Bayesian” superyacht was a 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged vessel. It sank quickly after being struck by a waterspout while moored about a kilometer (half a mile) offshore. Despite the shipbuilders’ assurances of its safety, the storm proved fatal, resulting in the loss of several lives.

Among the victims, one woman remains missing, believed to be Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah Lynch. The family had been celebrating Mike Lynch’s recent acquittal on fraud charges in the United States with members of his legal team. Emergency crews rescued five other individuals following the disaster.

Investigators from the Termini Imerese Public Prosecutor’s Office have launched a criminal investigation into the incident, although no formal suspects have been named. The chief executive of The Italian Sea Group, which owns the yacht’s manufacturer, expressed shock at the incident, stating that such superyachts are considered “the safest in the most absolute sense.”

As search efforts continue, the tragedy has cast a shadow over the luxury yacht industry and raised questions about the vulnerabilities of even the most sophisticated vessels in extreme weather conditions.
