The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has commenced a 7-day warning strike across all its centers nationwide, demanding the release of their kidnapped colleague, Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, who has been held captive for over eight months.
NARD President, Dr. Dele Abdullahi, announced the strike, stating that it would begin on Monday, August 26, 2024, at 12 am. He mentioned that the decision was reached during an emergency virtual National Executive Council meeting held on Sunday, August 25, 2024. The strike will be total, with no emergency care provided during the one-week period.
Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, a registrar in the Department of Ophthalmology at the National Eye Centre, Kaduna, was abducted nearly eight months ago, along with her husband and nephew. While her husband was released in March, Popoola and her nephew remain in captivity.
NARD members had protested at tertiary hospitals nationwide a few weeks ago, demanding the immediate release of Dr. Popoola.
