The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has clarified that former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, is not in its custody, despite reports suggesting otherwise. On Wednesday, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale confirmed that Bello remains wanted on allegations of laundering N80.2 billion.

“Media reports today claiming that a former Governor of Kogi State, Mr. Yahaya Bello, is in EFCC custody are incorrect. The Commission affirms that Bello is not in our facility and remains wanted under an existing arrest warrant,” Oyewale said.

This statement contradicts claims from Bello’s media team, which had earlier stated that the ex-governor had honored an EFCC invitation. A statement by the Director of Yahaya Bello’s Media Office, Ohiare Michael, said the former governor went to the EFCC after consulting with his legal team and allies. However, no further details or photos were provided.

Michael later issued a follow-up statement, asserting that Bello had visited the EFCC but was allowed to leave without interrogation. According to him, Bello was accompanied by his successor, Governor Usman Ododo.

In April, the EFCC declared Bello wanted for financial crimes totaling N80.2 billion. Despite several court dates, the former governor has not appeared before a trial judge. Bello, who served as Kogi State governor from January 2016 to January 2024, handed over power to Ododo, a fellow APC member.
