The Lagos State Government has issued warnings to demolish over 280 illegal structures in the Mayegun Waterfront Scheme, located in the Eti Osa Local Government area, as part of efforts to prevent the formation of slums and safeguard the state’s coastal regions. The government emphasized its commitment to preserving the Lagos State Master Plan and protecting waterfront infrastructure.
In a statement titled *”LASG Serves Contravention Notice on Illegal Occupants of Mayegun Waterfront Scheme”*, Lagos State Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Ekundayo Alebiosu, disclosed that contravention notices had been served to the property owners and occupants. These individuals have been given seven days to provide relevant documentation and approvals justifying their occupation of the properties. Failure to comply will result in the issuance of demolition notices.
The affected properties include completed, under-construction, and undeveloped lands, none of which have received government authorization, as determined by a detailed technical assessment carried out by the Ministry of Waterfront Infrastructure Development.
Alebiosu called on property owners to voluntarily remove their illegal structures or present any valid documents for regularization to avoid demolition penalties. He also stressed that illegal activities along the waterfront schemes must cease, as the state will no longer tolerate encroachments on government lands and setbacks.
The commissioner further revealed that the state is currently addressing similar encroachments in the Okun Ajah waterfront area. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting the state’s waterfront schemes and infrastructure, ensuring the safety of residents and properties along the Lagos coastline.
This move highlights the government’s ongoing efforts to maintain orderly development and prevent environmental degradation in Lagos State’s coastal areas.
