A tragedy unfolded in Niger State on Tuesday night when a boat carrying 300 passengers capsized, leaving around 150 people feared dead. The incident occurred at approximately 8:30 pm in the Gbajibo community of Mokwa Local Government Area, sending rescue teams into action. So far, nine bodies have been recovered, with many still unaccounted for.
Abdullahi Baba Arah, Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), confirmed the incident, stating that it took place on the River Niger, upstream of the Jebba Dam. “The boat was sailing from the Mundi community, carrying almost 300 passengers, mostly women and children,” he said. They were returning from a Maulid celebration in Gbajibo when the tragedy occurred.
NSEMA has since mobilized search and rescue operations, working alongside the State Ministry of Transport, the Mokwa Local Government Emergency Committee, local divers, and other community volunteers. “Nine bodies have been recovered so far—seven male and two female,” Arah reported, adding that rescue efforts are still ongoing.
Despite the grim situation, over 150 people have been rescued alive, thanks to the quick response of local volunteers. Search and rescue operations are continuing, with hopes of finding more survivors. As the community grapples with the aftermath of the accident, emergency teams remain on high alert, scouring the river for signs of life.
