At least 90 people have been confirmed dead following a tragic petrol tanker explosion in Majiya Town, Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State. The incident occurred late Tuesday night when the tanker driver lost control near Khadija University, leading to the devastating explosion.
Mr. Shi’isu Adam, the spokesperson for the Jigawa State Police Command, confirmed the fatality figures in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday. He also stated that 50 other individuals have been hospitalized with varying degrees of injuries caused by the blast.
The explosion took place around 11:30 p.m. when the tanker, en route from Kano to Nguru in Yobe State, crashed and exploded. Despite repeated warnings from the authorities about the dangers of gathering around fuel tanker accidents, a large number of people converged on the scene, resulting in the high casualty toll.
Efforts are underway to provide medical attention to the injured, who are currently being treated at the Ringim General Hospital. Authorities have scheduled a mass burial for the victims at 9 a.m. on Wednesday.
