A member of the House of Representatives, Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, has been arrested by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command following an assault on an e-hailing service driver during a dispute over a snail delivery.
The incident, which was captured in a viral video, shows the lawmaker representing Aba North & South Federal Constituency (APGA) slapping the Bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseya, twice at his residence in Abuja on Sunday evening.
According to police spokesperson Josephine Adeh, the confrontation arose when Abuwatseya arrived at the legislator’s home to deliver snails ordered from a vendor. A disagreement erupted when the driver requested payment for the delivery.
In the recorded footage, an enraged Ikwechegh is heard threatening the driver during a phone conversation with the vendor, saying, “I can make this man disappear in the whole of Nigeria and nothing will happen.” The lawmaker proceeded to assault the driver, who maintained his composure throughout the incident.
When reminded that the encounter was being recorded, Ikwechegh defiantly identified himself, challenging the driver to “Call the Inspector General of Police, let him come.”
The FCT Police Command expressed particular concern over the lawmaker’s “dismissive attitude toward the office of the Inspector General of Police.” Police Commissioner Olatunji Disu has ordered a thorough investigation into the matter.
“Currently, the suspect is at the Maitama Police Station undergoing questioning,” Adeh confirmed. “The Command is committed to conducting an impartial investigation and ensuring justice in all cases.”
Neither Ikwechegh nor the House of Representatives has issued an official statement on the incident, which has sparked outrage on social media with many Nigerians demanding justice for the driver.
