The Senate has summoned Gen. Buba Marwa, Chairman of the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), following controversial allegations against Deputy Senate Leader Oyelola Ashiru (APC, Kwara South).
The upper chamber has established a six-member investigative panel to probe claims that Senator Ashiru’s recent criticism of the NDLEA was motivated by the agency’s arrest and prosecution of individuals allegedly involved in drug abuse at his residence.
Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe (APGA, Abia South) will chair the panel, which includes Senators Kaka Shehu (APC, Borno Central), Ede Dafinone (APC, Delta Central), Ireti Kingibe (LP, FCT), Afolabi Shauibu (APC, Ogun Central), and Lawal Usman (PDP, Kaduna Central).
The decision followed a point of order raised by Senator Ashiru during Tuesday’s plenary. Speaking under Order 42 of the Senate Standing Order, Ashiru defended his reputation, emphasizing that he abstains from alcohol and carbonated drinks, consuming only water. He urged the Senate to treat the matter with utmost seriousness, citing concerns about damage to his integrity.
The Senate’s action came after an extended closed-door session that lasted nearly two hours. The panel is expected to invite all parties involved in the controversy for a thorough investigation.
