Thomas Tuchel has been appointed as the new England manager, effective from 1 January 2025. The 51-year-old German coach has signed an 18-month contract, becoming the third non-British permanent manager of the England men’s team, following Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.
Tuchel succeeds Gareth Southgate, who stepped down in July after England’s Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain. Interim manager Lee Carsley, who has overseen four games since August, will remain in charge for the upcoming Nations League matches against Greece and the Republic of Ireland.
In his first statement, Tuchel expressed pride in being chosen to lead England, highlighting his connection to the English game. The Football Association (FA) praised Tuchel as “one of the best coaches in the world” and revealed that he was their preferred candidate after an interview process with several managers.
Tuchel, who previously managed Chelsea and Bayern Munich, brings an impressive resume, including a Champions League victory with Chelsea in 2021. He will be assisted by Anthony Barry, who worked with him at both Chelsea and Bayern Munich.
