The federal government has suspended 13 students from the Federal Government College, Enugu, for six weeks over alleged bullying, following a viral video showing the students assaulting a peer in the school’s hostel.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Folashade Boriowo, Director of Press and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Education, confirmed the suspension, which was ordered by the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa.
Alausa stated that the ministry is committed to creating a safe and supportive learning environment in all federal schools. The bullying incident, which took place on November 7, involved the gang assault of an SS1 day student and was widely shared on social media, sparking public concern.
“In response, the Federal Ministry of Education established a disciplinary committee to investigate the matter,” Alausa noted. “Based on the committee’s findings, all 13 students involved have been placed on a six-week suspension pending further investigation.”
The minister also instructed the School-Based Management Committee to work with security agencies for a comprehensive investigation, including any possible connections to external influences. Additionally, measures to improve security have been implemented, including the involvement of law enforcement and a review of current safety protocols.
“Counseling and rehabilitation support will also be provided to address underlying issues and encourage a positive reintegration into the school environment,” Alausa added.
