Ukraine’s air force reported that Russia launched an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) during an assault on Thursday, marking the first reported use of such a powerful weapon in the ongoing war. The missile, designed for nuclear strikes over thousands of kilometers, targeted enterprises and critical infrastructure in Dnipro, according to Ukrainian authorities.
While Kyiv did not specify the missile type or its warhead, there was no indication it carried a nuclear payload. Ukrainian media speculated the weapon was an RS-26 Rubezh, a solid-fuel ICBM with a range of 5,800 kilometers, capable of carrying an 800-kilogram warhead. The missile attack damaged an industrial enterprise and triggered fires in Dnipro, with two people reported injured, regional governor Serhiy Lysak said.
This escalation follows Ukraine’s recent strikes inside Russia using U.S. and British missiles, which Moscow has warned would be treated as a major provocation. Russia’s Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov declined to comment, directing reporters to the military.
In addition to the ICBM, the Ukrainian air force reported that Russia launched a Kinzhal hypersonic missile and seven Kh-101 cruise missiles, six of which were intercepted.
