The General Council of the World Trade Organization (WTO) has reappointed Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as Director-General for a second four-year term, set to begin on September 1, 2025. The unanimous decision underscores her exceptional leadership and strategic vision for the organization’s future.

The reappointment process began on October 8, 2024, under the supervision of Ambassador Petter Ølberg of Norway, Chair of the General Council. With no other nominations submitted by the November 8 deadline, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala remained the sole candidate. The process adhered to the WTO’s procedures for appointing Directors-General and was conducted transparently.

At a special General Council meeting held on November 28–29, 2024, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala presented her vision for the WTO’s future and participated in a Q&A session with members. Following this, the Council formally endorsed her reappointment by consensus.

Ambassador Ølberg praised her achievements during her first term, stating:
“The General Council commends Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala for her outstanding leadership during her first term. Amid significant global economic challenges, she strengthened the WTO’s ability to support its members and set a forward-looking agenda for the organization. Her leadership was instrumental in securing meaningful outcomes at pivotal moments, including the 12th and 13th Ministerial Conferences.”

He added that her continued leadership would be essential in advancing a rules-based and equitable global trading system, ensuring the WTO remains responsive and results-driven.

Dr. Okonjo-Iweala made history in 2021 as the first woman and first African to lead the WTO. Her tenure has been marked by efforts to revitalize the organization’s relevance in addressing global trade challenges. Her reappointment reflects the strong support for her contributions and vision for the WTO’s role in shaping the future of global commerce.
