Elder statesman and prominent Afenifere chieftain, Pa Ayodele Adebanjo, has passed away at the age of 96. He died peacefully on the morning of Friday, February 14, 2025, at his residence in Lekki, Lagos State.

The news of his passing was confirmed by his children, Mrs. Ayotunde Atteh, Mrs. Adeola Azeez, and Mr. Obafemi Ayo-Adebanjo, in a statement. The family expressed deep sorrow, stating, “We will forever cherish his commitment to fighting for truth, equity, and justice. His belief and struggle for a truly independent and progressive Nigeria was total, and this he fought for until he breathed his last breath.”

Born on April 10, 1928, in Isanya Ogbo, Ogun State, Pa Adebanjo was a key figure in Nigeria’s political landscape. He was a founding member of the Action Group in the 1950s and served as the Organizing Secretary in the Remo Division. Throughout his life, he remained a strong advocate for democracy, justice, and good governance, playing a crucial role in shaping Nigeria’s political development.

Pa Adebanjo is survived by his 94-year-old wife, Chief Christy Ayo-Adebanjo, along with children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. The family announced that consultations are ongoing with friends, associates, and various interest groups to finalize plans for a befitting funeral, with details to be communicated in due course. Condolence registers have been opened at his residence in Lagos and his hometown of Isanya Ogbo, near Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.
