In a major move to streamline government revenue collection and enhance fiscal oversight, the Federal Government on Tuesday unveiled the Treasury Management and Revenue Assurance System (TMRAS). The platform aims to boost efficiency in revenue collections and improve budget performance across all ministries, departments, and agencies.
According to a statement released by the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF), TMRAS is designed to coordinate, streamline, and manage revenue collections and payments made by various government entities. “It will guarantee the liberalisation of government revenue payment processes, enhance revenue collections, and aid in the efficient, timely analysis of transaction information,” the statement read.
The new platform marks a significant step in modernising Nigeria’s fiscal operations by integrating multiple secure payment channels. While the government’s approved payment gateway, Remita, remains operational, it will now be integrated into TMRAS alongside other eligible Payment Solution Service Providers (PSSPs). “Remita is one of the secured channels of revenue payment, but there are many others. The TMRAS will now allow these other secure payment platforms to connect,” said Bawa Mokwa, spokesperson for the OAGF.
To ease concerns among revenue payers and the general public, officials emphasized that Remita will continue to serve as the sole approved payment gateway for Federal Government transactions and revenue collection for at least the next two months. Meanwhile, the government is working to take over the management of the front-end payment infrastructure, with plans to further expand the collection system to include additional CBN-licensed payment solution providers.
The launch of TMRAS is seen as a strategic move to modernise financial management within the government, ensuring that revenue collection is more transparent, efficient, and inclusive of multiple secure payment options.
