A Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court on Friday ordered the remand of former Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, in Kuje Correctional Centre after he pleaded not guilty to an eight-count charge bordering on contract fraud and abuse of office.
Justice Mariam Hassan issued the order following Ngige’s arraignment by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which accused the former minister of offences amounting to more than ₦2.2 billion. The allegations stem from his tenure as supervising Minister of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF).
Ngige, a former Anambra State governor, denied all charges. His lead counsel sought bail, arguing that he is a respected public figure, not a flight risk, and in need of urgent medical attention.
EFCC counsel Sylvanus Tahir opposed the request, insisting that remanding the defendant was necessary to avoid interference with investigations and to “send a strong anti-corruption signal.”
Justice Hassan agreed, ordering Ngige’s remand and adjourning the bail hearing to Monday, December 15, 2025.
The charges against Ngige include alleged corrupt enrichment and violations of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000.
