World football governing body FIFA has condemned the conduct of Senegalese players, officials and supporters following chaotic scenes during the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final, describing the incidents as “unacceptable” and contrary to the spirit of the game.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino expressed concern over the events that marred the final match, which was played amid heightened tension and controversy. The game was briefly disrupted after members of the Senegal team protested a key refereeing decision late in the encounter, leading to confrontations on the pitch and unrest in the stands.
In a strong statement, Infantino said such behaviour has no place in football, stressing that players and officials must respect match officials and adhere to the Laws of the Game at all times.
He noted that while emotions often run high during major finals, walking off the pitch, confronting referees, or engaging in disorderly conduct undermines the integrity of the sport and sets a poor example for fans worldwide.
Despite the disruption, the match was eventually completed, with Senegal going on to secure victory and claim the AFCON title. However, the celebrations were overshadowed by the fallout from the post-match scenes.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has also condemned the incidents and confirmed that it is reviewing reports and video footage from the final. Disciplinary action is expected against any individuals found to have violated competition regulations.
FIFA said it will work closely with CAF to ensure accountability, reiterating its commitment to fair play, respect for officials, and maintaining order at international football competitions.
