President Muhammadu Buhari says despite the scars he suffered in his first attempt at fighting corruption as the military head of state of Nigeria between 1984 and 1985, he would continue to sustain the anti-corruption war of his administration.

President Buhari stated this on Tuesday while inaugurating the new corporate head office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Abuja.0

While recounting how he was jailed for three years after he was overthrown, the President said corruption successful defeated him in his first attempt to rid the country of graft, vowing not to bow to any form of pressure or intimidation in his second attempt at taming corruption in Nigeria.

His words: “In my first attempt to fight corruption, corruption fought back successfully. I was detained for three years and only released after my mother died. In spite of that, my objective of fighting corruption remains steadfast.

“The war against corruption is not an easy one to fight because it affects so many different branches of our lives, so much as that some people do not even consider breaking the peoples’ trust to commit a crime anymore.

“It has become a norm. That is why we must fight this attitude and encourage Nigerians to change their attitudes and perspectives.”

He solicited the support of the legislature and judiciary in bringing corrupt people to book as well as recovering looted funds stolen in the past few years by people who he said had no conscience.
