American music producer and singer, Pharrell Williams has threatened to sue the United States President, Donald Trump for playing his hit song, ‘Happy’, during a campaign rally.
The US president on Saturday played the song at a rally which took place in Indiana, a few hours after the brutal shooting at Tree of Life Congregation synagogue in Pittsburgh.
Subsequently, William’s lawyer, Howard King sent a cease and desist letter to Trump’s representatives, accusing the US president of copyright and trademark infringement for using the song without seeking his permission.
King said: “Pharrell has not, and will not grant you permission to publicly perform or otherwise broadcast or disseminate any of his music.
“On the day of the mass murder of 11 human beings at the hands of a deranged ‘nationalist’, you played his song ‘Happy’ to a crowd at a political event in Indiana.
“There was nothing ‘happy’ about the tragedy inflicted upon our country on Saturday and no permission was granted for your use of this song for this purpose.”
Adele, Aerosmith, Neil Young, the Rolling Stones and Queen are some of the other notable musicians and bands that have warned Trump against playing their songs at his campaign rallies.
