Four officers of the Nigeria Police attached to the Ijanikin Division in Lagos State have been arrested for allegedly robbing one Theodore Ifunnaya of 350,000 CFA (about ₦221,508).
According to a statement issued by the spokesman of the Lagos State Police Command, CSP Chike Oti, Ifunnaya was a Nigerian businessman based in Togo.
Oti said that the affected policemen had been transferred to the Provost Section of the Command for investigation and could be dismissed from the Force if found guilty.
The affected officers allegedly accosted the victim who was coming from Togo to celebrate Christmas in Nigeria at Iyana – Iba on December 17.
The suspects also allegedly subjected the victim to a thorough search and interrogation, during which they discovered the money with him.
They then allegedly bundled him into their patrol vehicle to Ijanikin Police Station where they seized the money and invited a Bureau de Change operator who exchanged the CFA currency into its naira equivalent.
After they had successfully subdued their victim with threats, they allegedly released him and gave him a paltry sum of ₦2, 000 out of his money to enable him locate his residence.
After regaining freedom from his alleged police captors and locating his residence, Ifunnaya told his family members his ordeal. They then laid a complaint to the Area K Commander, ACP Hope Okafor.
Okafor is said to have intervened by recovering the stolen money and arresting the erring policemen for further interrogation.
