Nigeria’s Acting Inspector-General of Police, Muhammed Adamu has retired all the Deputy Inspectors-General of Police (DIGs). The retired DIGs, who were Adamu’s senior served with the former IGP, Ibrahim Idris.
The affected DIGs were those in charge of Finance and Administration, Maigari Dikko; Operations, Habila Joshak; Information and Communications Technology, Emmanuel Inyang; Logistics and Supply, Agboola Oshodi-Glover; Research and Planning, Mohammed Katsina; Training and Development, Sani Mohammed and Federal Criminal Investigation and Intelligence, Peace Ibekwe-Abdallah.
Adamu has also placed anoutright embargo on the issuance of new licences for designated arms throughout the country. The embargo is expected to be in full effect immediately.
The spokesman of the force, ACP Frank Mba who disclosed this in a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday called on Nigerians in unlawful possession of such weapons to return them to Police Stations or any public Armoury nearest to them.
Although he did not list the categories of the arms, Mba said the decision followed the proliferation of illicit weapons across the country and the desire of some citizens to acquire more arms.
He said Adamu advised Nigerians to take advantage of the voluntary arms return window and do the right thing as there will be dire consequences for defaulters.
Mba said that the Force has also perfected plans to embark on a massive, nationwide Joint Arms Mopping-up Operation which he said would be intelligent driven and target oriented.
