Ukraine’s security service, the SBU, announced Tuesday that a woman has been detained over an alleged Russian plot to assassinate President Volodymyr Zelensky.

According to the SBU, the suspect was arrested “red-handed” while attempting to gather intelligence on Zelensky’s plans and itinerary during a June visit to the Mykolaiv region. The information was intended to aid a potential Russian airstrike against the Ukrainian leader.

The agency said it uncovered the assassination scheme prior to Zelensky’s trip and implemented additional security measures. However, the woman was not apprehended until later while under surveillance by Ukrainian agents.

The SBU released an image showing the blurry-faced suspect with masked officers in her home. She is accused of touring the Mykolaiv area to photograph military sites and transmit details to Russia to facilitate targeting.

If convicted for unauthorized sharing of troop and weapons movement data, the woman faces up to 12 years imprisonment.

President Zelensky, who was updated on the matter by the SBU chief, has regularly visited both the frontlines and territories recaptured from Russian occupation. Ukraine frequently alleges locals supporting Russia pass intelligence to assist Moscow’s military.
