The governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu, has died at the age of 67 after battling health issues for several months. According to reports, Akeredolu passed away early Wednesday morning in a german hospital where he was undergoing treatment.
The late governor had reportedly been suffering from leukemia. He was re-elected for a second term as Ondo governor in October 2020 and sworn into office in February 2021.
However, his second term was plagued by health challenges. Akeredolu went on an overseas medical leave in June and spent months abroad receiving treatment.
When he returned to Nigeria in September, the ailing governor settled in Ibadan to continue his recuperation instead of the state capital Akure. This led to public criticism over his prolonged absence and inability to perform his duties.
On December 13th, Akeredolu formally handed over executive powers to his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, before proceeding abroad once again for further treatment. Aiyedatiwa has been acting governor since then.
Akeredolu’s death after battling grave illness leaves behind a legacy of public service spanning decades.
