The Federal Government has directed chief medical directors and medical directors of tertiary hospitals nationwide to activate alert systems in response to the emergence of the XEC COVID-19 variant. This variant, detected in 29 countries, including Australia, has raised global concerns due to its growth advantage over other circulating strains.

In a circular dated December 5, 2024, and signed by Dr. O. N. Anuma, Head of the Teaching Hospital Division for the Permanent Secretary, the federal government emphasized the need for heightened vigilance in identifying COVID-like symptoms in patients.

Titled “Letter of Conveyance in Respect of the Newly Detected XEC COVID-19 Strain,” the document urged hospitals to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to monitor and address the variant’s spread effectively.

“You may wish to know that this variant has shown a growth advantage over other circulating strains, raising concerns about its potential impact on public health,” the circular read.

It further instructed hospitals to share critical data with the Federal Ministry of Health and other relevant bodies to ensure a coordinated and timely response.

The government’s directive underscores the importance of preparedness and inter-agency collaboration in managing emerging public health threats, urging healthcare facilities to implement enhanced monitoring protocols immediately.
