The Federal Government has directed the Nigeria Immigration Service to withdraw passports from Nigerians who have formally renounced their citizenship.

The directive was issued by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who stated that individuals whose renunciation has been officially approved are no longer entitled to hold Nigerian passports.

According to the minister, once the process of renunciation is concluded in line with constitutional provisions, such individuals cease to be citizens and must surrender all national identification documents, including passports.

He explained that the move is part of efforts to strengthen the integrity of Nigeria’s citizenship system, prevent identity-related abuses, and reinforce national security.

The government also noted that the directive aligns with ongoing reforms in passport administration and broader measures aimed at ensuring that only eligible persons possess Nigerian travel documents.
