The Peace Corps of Nigeria (PCN), has slammed a N2bn suit against the Inspector General of Police (IGP), the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), over alleged unlawful arrest and detention of its National Commandant, Ambassador (Dr.) Dickson Akoh and 49 others.
In the suit instituted by a former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Kanu Agabi, PCN is demanding the sum of N2bn as compensation for the embarrassment caused the Peace Corps and its affiliate bodies by the unlawful action of the security operatives.
In the suit filed at the Federal High Court, Abuja, the plaintiffs are asking the court, among other things, to declare as illegal, unlawful and unconstitutional, the arrest of its National Commandant and other officers of the corps as well as the sealing up of its head office in Abuja and other offices in the 36 states of the federation.
The Applicants are also praying the court to grant an order restraining the respondents, their privies or agents, from further sealing of their offices and disrupting the activities of its members nationwide.
It would be recalled that security agents had on Tuesday last week raided the new National Headquarters of the Peace Corps and arrested the commandant and 49 others. They were accused of illegally operating like a law enforcement agency instead of as an NGO under which they were registered several years ago.
