The Chairperson of the African Union, Moussa Faki Mahamat, has reiterated his support for the candidature of Ethiopian public health analyst, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus to lead the World Health Organization.
In a tweet he shared on Monday morning, Mahamat stated that the African continent was united behind Tedros to help him surmount the challenges posed by Britain’s David Nabarro and Pakistani physician, Samia Nishkar.
“When Africa speaks with one voice, she wins. Africa is united for Dr. Tedros,” the tweet read.
Preceding the AU Chief, Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote took to Twitter to also endorse the 52-year-old Tedros, describing him as a talented Ethiopian public servant who had saved millions of lives and achieved immensely in transforming the health sector of Ethiopia.
The World Health Assembly which is the decision-making body of WHO is currently holding its annual general meeting in Geneva, Switzerland where members are expected to appoint the new Director-General who will take the reins of office from Dr Margaret Chan on July 1, 2017.
