Irked by the increasing wave of insecurity in Nigeria, the governor of Niger State, Abubakar Bello has said that he no longer has confidence in the ability of security agencies in the country.
The Governor who stated this while hosting the Niger State Council of Traditional Rulers led by its Chairman, Etsu Nupe, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar at the Government House on Tuesday in Minna, suggested that security votes should instead be given to traditional rulers to create local policing systems that will curb the rising wave of crime and protect lives and property.
“Despite the huge amounts voted and given to security agencies monthly, they have failed in making the state and nation safer as crime seems to have become the order of the day,” the Governor stated.
“I suggest that we go back to the traditional ways of securing our communities. The traditional system performed better in the past and they can do better now if more powers are given to them.
“We spend a lot of money on security but we do not have a safe environment. In Niger state, we spend N100 million every month on security and I am sure that if we spend a fraction of that money on traditional rulers, we will get better results than we have now,” he added.
Lamenting the level of insecurity in the state, the Governor called on both Christians and Muslims to embark on fervent prayers and rise to the challenge of curbing crime instead of depending solely on security agencies.
