Apart from the high rate of unemployment in Nigeria generally, a lot of young people seem to be in love with the idea of working with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. This may not be unconnected with the perception by many that the EFCC is a powerful organisation which automatically means that Nigerians who work there are seen as people who would hold enormous power.

By the very nature of their job, EFCC operatives attract a lot of respect, even fear. The sharp Alecs in society would do everything to avoid them.

The Commission is currently working on recruiting people to fill 750 positions but the development that should amaze many Nigerians is that over 300,000 persons have applied. EFCC’s Director of Public Affairs, Osita Nwaja, disclosed the figures when he visited the Enugu office of the News Agency of Nigeria. “We had more than 300,000 applicants for the 750 positions which are in three cadres — junior, middle and senior cadres.”

Nwaja also revealed that the commission is considering the recruitment of “a whole lot of junior staff so that they will grow in the system.” According to him, “The criteria were well spelled out and those that met them wrote the examination. We must keep on recruiting foot soldiers to meet our objective as it is geared toward the direction of making Nigeria greater.”
