The Senate has approved President Bola Tinubu’s proclamation of a state of emergency in Rivers State, following in the footsteps of the House of Representatives. The approval, granted under the amended 1999 Constitution, empowers the President to enforce emergency measures while requiring a review of the situation within six months.
As stipulated by the Constitution, the National Assembly has also set up a joint committee of both chambers to oversee the administration of Rivers State during the emergency period.
In addition, the Senate has resolved to establish a mediation committee comprising eminent Nigerians to help resolve the ongoing political crisis in the state.
